Around the World in 1000 Days

Global, Travel No Comments

Wondering where I’ve been lately?

With my big move across the world to Dubai, I decided to create a blog that I could solely dedicate to the fun of travel, photography and my new adventure abroad. I would love for you to come on the journey with me at: http://aroundtheworldin1000days.com

TYPEFACE film poster

Typography No Comments

I’m absolutely and totally in love with this Letterpress Film poster by Daren Newman for the (Manchester UK) screening of the film “TYPEFACE.” Hand-drawn, etched into wood, individually inked, and printed on an Albion Press (at Hot Bed Press). Organized by Shillington College, INC, and Funnel Creative. LOVELY!

QR Code Design

Graphic Design, Through My Lens, Travel No Comments

I moved to Dubai during the month of Ramadan I have been lucky enough to see a lot of great examples of design specifically geared towards celebrating “Ramadan Kareem.” Everything from posters, banners, flyers and billboards share in the joy of this most holiest of months in the Islamic calendar.

What I didn’t expect to see was a QR Code designed so beautifully and now I’m intrigued. Are there other designs around town taking advantage of the patterning and intricacies within a QR code to enhance their overall message? Is the QR code becoming a necessary element within print design? I’m definitely going to keep my eyes peeled as I explore the city more and hope to share some additional QR codes here soon.

Have you seen any QR codes around your town that make you stop and appreciate them for design aesthetics alone? If so, I would love for you to share.

On a related note, barcodes can present designers with another opportunity to enhance packaging design. Paying attention to even the smallest of details when you take on a new design project is critical. Check out this short article titled “In Japan, Even the Barcodes Are Well Designed” to learn a little more about other places in the world who are thinking along the same lines.

Hodge-Podge

Graphic Design No Comments

I have spent the past few weeks doing a lot of catchup on design reading I’ve put off for one reason or another. This holds true for my online resources as much as my physical book collection, if not more so. I have this (terrible) habit of quickly bookmarking sites and articles I run across, but somehow I never get around to actually reading them. NOW is the time (or so I’m telling myself).

I’ve started by reorganizing my bookmarks (this could take a lifetime if I’m not careful) and going through the articles/links I want to read, trash, or save.

In doing so, I have run across a few articles that I thought might be interesting to current (or former) students and have listed them here in case anyone would like to poke around. If you have a little time on your hands I think you might enjoy them. It’s a bit of a hodge-podge though, so readers beware.

…of Mr Morris Lessmore

Ingenious app for children and adults alike “inspired in equal measures, by Hurricane Katrina, Buster Keaton, The Wizard of Oz, and a love for books.” The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore is a story of people who devote their lives to books and books who return the favor. Beautiful illustrations and truly engaging use of ipad technology. What an exciting time to be a designer and programmer!

If You Have

Global, Typography No Comments

A young friend posted this image to her facebook page yesterday and the social-advocate in me just had to share. It’s definitely not the best typography I have ever seen, but it is a sobering reminder of all the things we take for granted each and every day. That’s worth sharing hands down.

It’s raining, It’s pouring

Through My Lens, Travel No Comments

…and we’re definitely not snoring!

It’s our first night in Orlando and we’re enjoying an incredible storm from our hotel window. We actually got to see the storm roll in after our (delicious Brazilian) dinner and have been enjoying the lightening display ever since. If you look closely in the second photo, you’ll notice the lightening is hitting almost directly over Universal Studios. Talk about a light show!

Sitting is Killing You

Illustration, Info Graphics No Comments

I’ve been worrying about how much “sitting” I’ve been doing recently since I’ve spent many a day (and night) doing just that. It has me worried…. and it should! Check out this great Info-graphic on the subject titled Sitting Is Killing You created by Medical Billing and Coding. I have to get better at stretching and walking in between these long stints at the computer… or I’m going to be in major trouble!

MWIA Exhibit

Exhibition, Painting, Travel No Comments

On Friday evening local artists gave voice to the victimization and empowerment of women affected by injustice and abuse through their art. The “Healing & Empowerment: Violence, Women & Art” exhibit was hosted by Muslim Women in the Arts (MWIA) and was absolutely fantastic. The beautiful artwork and powerful messages adorned the walls of the Silver Spring Civic Building (MD) and inspired me to no end. Below you’ll find a few photos of the artwork on sale with proceeds benefiting the organization and it’s support of women artists. Donate or buy a piece by visiting here.
